What you’ll do

As a European Natural Gas Portfolio Trader, you will be responsible for managing the company’s gas positions across various European hubs, optimizing the commercial value of the portfolio through active trading and risk management. You will operate in short- and mid-term markets, including spot, prompt, and forward timeframes, ensuring that supply, demand, and storage assets are optimally balanced and monetized. Your decisions will directly impact the PnL of the portfolio trading book, and you will work in close coordination with portfolio managers, originators, and risk teams to manage exposures in a volatile and dynamic market environment.

You will work together as one team in Portfolio Trading but also have individual responsibilities to contribute to our goals. You will be creating an environment in where you exchange insights and opinions with colleagues. 

In addition, you bring the following with you: 

  • University degree in Finance, Economics, Engineering, or a quantitative discipline.
  • 2–5 years of trading experience in European gas.
  • Knowledge of European gas hubs (TTF, NBP, etc.), trading instruments, and market structures.  
  • Experience with gas logistics, storage, transportation, and balancing regimes.
  • Strong numerical and analytical skills; ability to interpret large data sets in a trading context.
  • High stress tolerance, decisive, and comfortable taking responsibility in time-critical situations.
  • Experience with Python, SQL, or trading support tools is a strong advantage.
  • A proactive, results-oriented and entrepreneurial personality;
  • A winner's mentality where you show resilience and perseverance to achieve successes.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Team player with eye for cooperation with the Portfolio Management team.
  • You are already resident in the Netherlands 

You’ll be responsible for

Market Trading & Optimization 

  • Trade across European natural gas hubs (e.g., TTF, NBP, PEG, THE, ZTP) in spot, prompt, and forward markets to optimize the portfolio's value

  • Manage open positions actively within delegated risk limits, balancing hedging needs with market opportunities 

  • Execute physical and financial trades (e.g., OTC, exchange-based) in line with commercial strategy and asset constraints 

  • Execute hedging strategies to mitigate market and volumetric risk of generation and consumption positions 

  • Manage open positions in alignment with internal risk limits, market outlook, and asset flexibility

  • Take opportunistic asset backed positions where appropriate, within defined mandate

Market Monitoring & Analysis 

  • Monitor real-time market fundamentals including weather, LNG flows, pipeline outages, storage levels, and geopolitical risks

  • Use quantitative tools and market intelligence to identify arbitrage opportunities (e.g., time spreads, hub spreads, cross-commodity)

  • Contribute to market views and trade ideas for internal discussions and strategy alignment

  • Feed trading insights back into portfolio management team

Asset Baked Trading 

  • Translate the embedded optionality of assets into commercial trading decisions

  • Collaborate with the Portfolio Manager to optimize gas storages against market signals

  • Manage and trade gas flexibility contracts as part of the portfolio

Collaboration & Systems 

  • Work closely with analysts, meteorologists, portfolio managers, and quants to enhance trading strategies

  • Support improvements to tools, models, and trading infrastructure (e.g., algorithms, ETRM systems) 

  • Contribute to shaping a data-driven, fast-paced trading culture

This is where you’ll work

As a Gas Power Trader, you will work within the Portfolio Trading Team for Eneco right next to Rotterdam-Alexander station. A complex, dynamic environment where ever-moving markets, ever-changing positions, new technologies, and the law of inhibiting head start create a challenging field of tension. 

The Trading Team is part of horizontal chain Trading and Origination (T&O). Valie Chain (VC) T&O is the international trading division of Eneco. Gross annual salary between €88.000 and €125.000

Hybrid working: home, office or abroad

Work 40% at the office, 40% from home, and 20% flexibly. With manager approval, you may work abroad (within approved countries) up to 3 weeks/year, max 2 consecutively.
