Data Engineer (Agro Energy)

    • Data that drives real decisions - at pace. New energy products are being developed at high speed to respond to a fast-moving market. The pipelines you build and the models you feed directly power forecasting, optimization, and trading decisions for AgroEnergy and B2B Flex Services clients. When your pipeline runs, growers and traders make better decisions. That is the feedback loop.

    • Hands-on and in charge of what comes next. You are not implementing someone else's architecture. In the coming year you will expand EPEX day-ahead forecasting from hours to quarters, introduce AI-assisted data transformations in C#, lead a migration toward Snowflake using OneLake with Iceberg tables, and modernize the Azure landscape to align with Eneco's new Azure Policy Framework - covering NIS2 (Network and Information Security Directive 2) and current security and compliance standards. Both the code and the direction are yours.

    • In-house ownership, from day one. Eneco is actively bringing critical data and technology capability back in-house. You are joining at the point where ownership actually transfers - which means you shape what the platform becomes, not inherit what it was.

Why choose Eneco?

Eneco is one of Europe's leading sustainable energy companies, working toward climate neutrality by 2035. Our One Planet strategy - committed to electrification and the elimination of fossil fuels - is one of the most ambitious sustainability commitments in the sector.

AgroEnergy sits at an unusually direct intersection of data and real-world impact. Dutch greenhouse horticulture is one of the most energy-intensive sectors in the Netherlands, operating in an increasingly complex and volatile energy market. AgroEnergy's ambition is clear: to be the best electricity supplier and a complete, strategic energy partner for its clients - delivering smart, innovative solutions to complex energy challenges. The data platform you build is what makes that ambition operational. This is not data as a support function - it is data as the product.

What you’ll do

As an Experienced Data Engineer in the AgroEnergy team, you combine deep hands-on data engineering with technical leadership. You design, build, and improve cloud-native data solutions in Azure - powering predictive models and a self-built dimensional data warehouse that supports energy optimization and trading decisions for agricultural clients and B2B Flex Services.

You take a leading role in defining the technical direction of the data platform: identifying debt, shaping improvement initiatives, setting architecture and engineering standards, and mentoring the engineers around you. The coming period brings a concrete set of technical challenges - expanding forecasting models, introducing AI tooling, migrating toward Snowflake, and aligning the Azure landscape with Eneco's new security and compliance framework. This is a role for someone who wants to be deeply involved in the technology and trusted to raise the bar for the whole team.

Is this about you?

You are equally comfortable working alone in the code as you are in the daily rhythm of a scrum team — pair reviewing, joining refinement, keeping the team moving. The best solutions here come from the group, and you know that. You are a data engineer with enough depth to own the architecture and enough pragmatism to get your hands dirty. You like working close to the business - understanding what a forecasting model actually needs, or why a particular data flow matters to an energy trader - and you translate that understanding into technical solutions that hold up in production. You are comfortable setting direction and comfortable writing the code that proves it. You stay current: AI-assisted development, modern lakehouse patterns, and evolving cloud compliance standards are not abstract concepts to you - they are part of how you work.

Must have

  • Strong data engineering background in Azure cloud environments, or C# backend development experience with a clear data engineering affinity

  • Proficiency in C# (preferred) or equivalent programming languages used in data-intensive environments

  • Hands-on experience with Azure services: Azure Data Factory, Azure Functions, Azure SQL Databases, and Azure DevOps

  • Strong SQL skills - able to write, review, and optimize complex queries

  • Dutch language proficiency: reading and listening are required; speaking and writing in either Dutch or English is accepted

  • Solid understanding of software engineering best practices: code reviews, version control, testing, and CI/CD

  • Experience working directly with analysts, data scientists, quantitative specialists, or business-oriented teams

  • Ability to balance business understanding with technical execution - translating domain requirements into architecture decisions and clear technical direction

  • Experience contributing to platform migration or modernization initiatives

  • Familiarity with data modelling and architecture patterns - dimensional modelling, data vault, or equivalent

  • Experience with Azure monitoring and observability tooling

  • Genuine interest in DevOps principles and production-grade deployment practices

Nice to have

  • Experience with Snowflake and/or lakehouse patterns such as OneLake with Iceberg tables

  • Experience with AI-assisted development tooling in a data engineering or C# context

  • Familiarity with energy market data, EPEX trading, or forecasting in a volatile commodity market

  • Background in agri-tech or other domains where data directly drives operational or commercial decisions

You’ll be responsible for

  • Designing, building, and maintaining end-to-end data pipelines - from ingestion through transformation to structured exposure

  • Developing and maintaining predictive data flows that support forecasting and energy optimization use cases - including expanding EPEX (European Power Exchange) day-ahead market forecasting from hourly to quarter-hourly resolution without compromising model performance

  • Building and optimizing a dimensional data warehouse used for analytics and Power BI reporting

  • Creating and maintaining an architecture overview for the data platform - covering key components, integrations, dependencies, and data flows

  • Defining and communicating the technical direction for data architecture, engineering standards, and platform modernization - together with the team and stakeholders

  • Leading the migration and integration of platform components toward Snowflake, including OneLake with Iceberg tables

  • Driving alignment of the Azure landscape with Eneco's Azure Policy Framework to ensure ongoing compliance with NIS2 and current security and compliance standards

  • Introducing and embedding AI-assisted tooling to accelerate and simplify data transformations in C#

  • Identifying technical debt and translating it into concrete improvement plans and initiatives

  • Providing technical guidance, peer coaching, and mentorship to other data engineers in the team

  • Implementing CI/CD (Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery) pipelines for data workflows, including testing, validation, and deployment

  • Applying Infrastructure as Code (IaC) for Azure resource deployments

  • Ensuring monitoring, incident analysis, and operational reliability of data pipelines

  • Collaborating closely with testers, business analysts, product owners, and stakeholders across the AgroEnergy and B2B Flex Services value chains

This is where you’ll work

You join Eneco's Digital & Tech domain as part of a dedicated value-chain team embedded within the AgroEnergy business, also serving B2B Flex Services. The team consists of data engineers and a test engineer - a small, focused group where your technical leadership has direct impact. You collaborate closely with business stakeholders from the AgroEnergy product team, ensuring data solutions stay tightly connected to real-world energy optimization challenges.

New energy products are being developed at high speed to respond to a fast-moving market, and the data your team delivers is what keeps the business informed and ahead. The team works with modern Azure-based technologies in a culture that values ownership, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement. Eneco offers flexible hybrid working with Rotterdam as the home base, and the autonomy to shape how and where you deliver the most impact.
